What Is Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana?

Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) is a government savings scheme for the girl child, launched in 2015 under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign. Parents open an account in their daughter's name, deposit money for 15 years, and the account grows until it matures 21 years after opening – ready for her higher education or marriage.

It pays one of the highest interest rates among government savings schemes, is backed by the Government of India, and is completely tax-free. For parents who want a safe, guaranteed way to build a fund for their daughter, it's hard to beat.

How to Use the SSY Calculator

Step 1 – Choose monthly or yearly deposits and enter the amount. You can deposit anything from ₹250 to ₹1.5 lakh a year.

Step 2 – Enter your daughter's age when the account is opened (she must be under 10) and the year you open it.

Step 3 – Check the interest rate. It's pre-filled with the current 8.2%. You can change it to see what happens if the rate moves.

The calculator shows how much you'll deposit, the tax-free interest earned, the maturity value and year, and how much will be in the account when she turns 18 – the age at which you can withdraw half for her education. Open the year-by-year breakdown to see the balance grow each year.

How Much Will Your Daughter Get?

Here's what different monthly deposits grow to at 8.2%, assuming the rate stays the same for all 21 years:

Monthly DepositTotal You DepositTax-Free InterestMaturity Value
₹1,000₹1.80 lakh₹3.75 lakh₹5.55 lakh
₹2,000₹3.60 lakh₹7.49 lakh₹11.09 lakh
₹5,000₹9.00 lakh₹18.73 lakh₹27.73 lakh
₹10,000₹18.00 lakh₹37.46 lakh₹55.46 lakh
₹12,500 (the maximum)₹22.50 lakh₹46.83 lakh₹69.33 lakh

In every case, the interest you earn is more than double what you put in. That's the power of 21 years of compounding – and you only deposit for the first 15.

The Last 6 Years Do the Heavy Lifting

If you deposit the full ₹1.5 lakh at the start of every year, the account holds about ₹44.76 lakh after 15 years, when your deposits stop. Over the next six years – without a single new rupee from you – it grows to ₹71.82 lakh. That's ₹27 lakh of growth just from leaving it alone.

A Simple Trick to Earn More Interest

SSY interest is calculated every month on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day of the month. So when you deposit matters:

  • If you deposit monthly, pay before the 5th so that month's deposit earns interest.
  • If you can, deposit the whole year's amount in April, at the start of the financial year.

Depositing ₹1.5 lakh every April instead of ₹12,500 a month gives you about ₹2.49 lakh more at maturity – ₹71.82 lakh versus ₹69.33 lakh – for exactly the same total deposit. Try both options with the Monthly and Yearly buttons in the calculator.

Tax Benefits of SSY

SSY is one of the few schemes with full EEE (Exempt–Exempt–Exempt) status:

  • Deposits qualify for a deduction under Section 80C, up to ₹1.5 lakh a year – but only if you choose the old tax regime.
  • Interest earned every year is tax-free.
  • The maturity amount is completely tax-free.

Even if you're in the new tax regime and don't get the 80C deduction, the interest and maturity amount are still tax-free. Not sure which regime you're in? Compare them with our Income Tax Calculator.

Withdrawal and Closure Rules

  • At 18 (or after Class 10): You can withdraw up to 50% of the balance at the end of the previous financial year, for her higher education.
  • For marriage: The account can be closed early once she turns 18, if she's getting married.
  • On compassionate grounds: Early closure is also allowed after five years in special cases, such as a life-threatening illness or the death of the guardian.
  • At maturity: After 21 years, the full amount is paid out and the account is closed.

SSY beats PPF on interest rate: ₹1.5 lakh a year for 15 years grows to about ₹44.76 lakh in SSY versus about ₹40.68 lakh in PPF at today's rates. But neither can match the long-term growth potential of equity. Compare PPF with our PPF Calculator.

Mistakes to Avoid

Relying Only on SSY for College Fees

Education costs in India are rising much faster than general inflation. An SSY account alone may not cover a professional degree 18 years from now. Many parents pair SSY – the safe, guaranteed part – with an equity SIP for growth. Our guide on planning for your child's education shows how, and the Step-up SIP Calculator helps you plan a SIP that grows with your income.

Missing the Minimum Deposit

If you don't deposit at least ₹250 in a financial year, the account becomes irregular. You can revive it by paying the missed minimum amounts plus a penalty of ₹50 for each year missed – but it's easier to set up a standing instruction and never miss a year.

Waiting Too Long to Open the Account

Because the account matures 21 years after opening, opening it when she's 1 means the money is ready at 22; opening it at 9 means waiting until she's 30. Open it early so maturity lines up with when she's likely to need the money.

Questions People Actually Ask Us

Is the SSY interest rate fixed for 21 years? No. The government reviews it every quarter, and your whole balance earns whatever the current rate is. It has been 8.2% since January 2024, but it can change in future.

What is the maximum I can get from SSY? If you deposit the maximum ₹1.5 lakh at the start of every year for 15 years and the rate stays at 8.2%, the account matures at about ₹71.82 lakh.

Can I open SSY online? Many banks let you open and fund an SSY account through net banking or their app. You can also open one at any post office with your daughter's birth certificate and your ID and address proof.

Can grandparents open an SSY account? Only a parent or legal guardian can open the account, but anyone can contribute to it.

What happens after 15 years when I stop depositing? The account keeps earning interest until it matures at 21 years. You don't need to do anything.
